Many coaches and athletes know that we can become explosive with our legs/core area. You can go back on this blog and watch the three previous videos on different explosion exercises for the lower body. The upper body is a totally different area. We tend as coaches and athletes not to work this area with explosion but why? There are many different reason but I think one of the big ones is we do not know many different exercises to do. Well I am going to go over a basic one that has been around for a while.
I call it the Power Push-up/Explosive Push-up many people call it the Clap push-up. It is a push up that you do where you explode your upper body off the ground and then land back down and repeat. There is also a beginner Power push-up where your hands do not leave the ground. Both variations are on the video.
As you watch the video you will see there are a couple of key points:
1. Explode from the low part of the push-up. As I watch athletes do it they tend to push-up and then explode off the ground when there arms are almost fully extended.
2. Upon landing make sure to bend your elbows to absorb the impact. Do not land with your arms extended this can cause joint problems in the shoulder, elbow and wrist joints.
3. Last thing is to imagine pushing the ground away from you. So when you are down right before you explode up imagine pushing the earth as far away from you as possible.
Enjoy this exercises to start to build upper body explosion. Remember all sports require some type of explosion. So train your body to be prepared for competition.
This is the last exercise in this series of Explosive Exercises if there are other exercises or drills you would like to see please comment below or email me [email protected].
